The Constantine Friday Backback Program (CFBP) has evolved over the past few years from a small outreach program, to a large community-wide service project, serving fifty plus students a year with the support and help of the residents of Constantine, local neighboring communities as well as our local businesses and churches. When the program started, the school was able to provide backpacks for 12 students a week. Last year, the program served up to 62 students each week.
The program is based on referral, by teachers, staff and other outside agencies. When a student is identified as needing assistance, the school counselor contacts the family and secures their permission to participate in the program. School volunteers, such as parents, educational assistants and administrative assistants make sure that the students receive the bag of food before they leave for the weekend. The program is dependent on volunteers from both the school district and the community in order to run properly.
The program works with the Food Bank of South Central Michigan, which packs the food and delivers the bags to Constantine. Constantine Public Schools superintendent Chuck Frisbie arranged for a storage site on the campus of Riverside Elementary, and all volunteers are from Constantine. The program has truly been designed for Constantine students, by Constantine volunteers, and paid for entirely by Constantine, our surrounding neighbors and local businesses.
At this time, the CFBP is currently looking for donations to provide “Holiday Packs” in December. If you would like to help, please feel free to contact Steffany Predosa at firstname.lastname@example.org.
